Contactless payment is already transforming how people travel. As transit systems around the world work to become more integrated, EMV contactless payment is becoming increasingly common. Facilitating this change is EMV technology, which helps agencies modernize operations and meet evolving rider expectations.
What holds many transit agencies back, particularly in North America, is a belief that the process is complex, requiring significant investment in time and resources.
To make the right long-term decision for your transit agency it’s important to understand both the challenges and potential benefits that making the transition could deliver.
What is EMV in Transit?
EMV (Europay, Mastercard, and Visa) is a global payment standard that enables secure transactions using a chip to store and process data. It was developed in the 1990s to reduce the high cost of card authorization in Europe.
Today, EMVCo, a global technical body, manages this standard, facilitating secure, worldwide payment interoperability.
In public transit, EMV allows fast, secure, and convenient fare payment. Riders can use their existing contactless cards or devices to board buses or trains, similar to how they pay in retail environments. This is known as an Open-Loop EMV Payment System, which eliminates the need for proprietary travel cards. A Closed-Loop system, in contrast, restricts payments to a dedicated card that must be prepaid.
Key Benefits of EMV Contactless Payment in Transit
Transit agencies and riders alike can realize a range of benefits when implementing EMV systems:
Reduced Costs
Enhanced Security
Greater Convenience
Flexibility for Agencies
Meeting Riders Expectations
According to a 2021 Visa survey, 88% of global travelers expect contactless transit payments. Failing to meet these expectations can impact ridership.
Better Fare Equity
Challenges of implementing EMV in Transit Systems
While the benefits are compelling, several perceived challenges can slow adoption:
Time and Operational Disruption
Cost of Migrating Legacy Systems
Customer Adoption
Security and Compliance
How Agencies can prepare for EMV Implementation
A successful transition to EMV starts with careful planning and stakeholder engagement.
Consider the following steps:
Is EMV the Right Move for Your Transit Agency?
EMV contactless systems offer a practical way for transit agencies to modernize fare collection while keeping pace with how people prefer to pay. While implementation can bring technical and operational challenges, these are manageable with the right planning and expertise.
